Graduating with a major in Applied Physics from the Faculty of Engineering at Osaka City University. Established hers design inc. in 1986, following a successful career at SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. Renowned as a Design Think Tank, introduced several inventive methods such as the [S.S.F.B. method] and [Hexagon Graph for Sensibility Value] for creative workshops. With a primary focus on product design, garnered 219 domestic and international design awards, including the Good Design Gold Award, DFA Grand Award, RedDot Best of the Best, German Design Award Winners, iF Design Gold Award, Social Products Award, and DIA Silver Award. Recognized by Newsweek as one of the Global Focus 100 Japanese SMEs for achievements such as world-record sales numbers with designs such as OMRON's [Spot Arm] and Microsoft's [Xbox360]. Running own consortium design brand METAPHYS, utilizes the workshop method of [Design of Behavior] to leverage the core competencies of collaborating companies, actively participating in product development through to merchandising.
畢業於大阪市立大學工學部應用物理學系，離開三洋電機株式會社後，創立了Hers實驗設計研究所。作為一個知名的設計智庫，他引入了多種創新方法，例如「S.S.F.B.法」和「感性價值」，並廣泛應用於創意工作坊。以產品設計為核心，他已榮獲219項國內外設計大獎，包括Good Design金獎、DFA大獎、RedDot Best of the Best、德國設計獎、iF設計金獎、社會產品獎及 DIA銀獎等。其設計作品包括 OMRON 上臂式血壓計 Spot Arm 和微軟 Xbox 360 等，皆創下了打破世界紀錄的銷售成績，並因此被《新聞周刊》評選為「全球矚目的 100 家日本中小企業」之一。他自創的聯合設計品牌 METAPHYS，以「行為設計思考法」為核心，充分發揮合作企業的核心競爭力，積極參與從產品開發到商品化的全過程，並獲得廣泛好評。
Design of Behavior Museum
The First Permanent Exhibition Facility to Experience “Design of Behavior” by Chiaki Murata 村田智明所提倡的「行為設計」首個常設展覽館
On May 22, 2025, the “Design of Behavior Museum,” produced by Chiaki Murata, reopened after renewal at the Qingtai International Industrial Design Village in China. This museum is the first permanent exhibition facility to systematically introduce Murata's unique design methodology, “Design of Behavior,” which he has advocated for many years. With a focus on “product development starting from human behavior,” the museum showcases a wide variety of products developed by Murata himself. All of these are presented as concrete case studies, allowing visitors to experience and learn about the methodology in an interactive way. By re-examining the essence of usability from the perspective of “people's unconscious actions,” Murata has created products that seamlessly fit into everyday life. His philosophy and practical approach, condensed into this facility, offer new insights and learning opportunities to a wide audience, from design students and professionals to business people.
2025年5月22日，由村田智明策劃的「行為設計博物館（Design of Behavior Museum）」在中國青苔國際工業設計村重新開幕。本博物館是首個系統性介紹村田多年來倡導的獨特設計方法「行為設計（Design of Behavior）」的常設展覽設施。以「從人的行為出發進行產品開發」為主題，展出了多款由村田親自設計的產品。這些展品均以具體案例形式呈現，讓參觀者可以親身體驗並學習這種設計手法。村田從「人們無意識的行為」重新審視易用性的本質，創造出貼近日常生活的產品。館內凝聚了他的設計理念與實踐，為設計學生、專業人士以及商界人士等廣泛群體帶來全新的啟發與學習體驗。

Japan Industrial Design Association (JIDA) Signs Letter of Understanding (LOU) with Red Dot Design Award
On September 22, 2025, the Japan Industrial Design Association (JIDA), chaired by Chiaki Murata, officially signed a LOU with Red Dot GmbH & Co. KG — the organization behind the world-renowned Red Dot Design Award, which boasts a history of over 70 years in Germany. Going forward, JIDA will serve as Red Dot’s official liaison office in Japan, providing information and support for designers and companies seeking to participate in or receive recognition from the Red Dot Design Award. The partnership aims to bridge Japanese design with a global audience, facilitating international engagement and recognition for Japanese creators. This collaboration aims to reintroduce the unique value of “Made in Japan” to the world, further enhancing the global recognition and development of Japanese design.

JIDA × For Startups Holds “New Industry Innovation Summit Starting from Industrial Design”
On September 27, 2025, JIDA, in collaboration with For Startups, Inc., hosted a design summit under the theme “New Industry Innovation Starting from Industrial Design.” The event focused on driving industrial innovation, social transformation, and technological advancement through design thinking, exploring how design can act as a catalyst connecting investment, policy, and social action. Chiaki Murata remarked: “Industrial design is not merely about form; it is a power that connects society and creates value.” JIDA will continue its commitment to integrating design education with industry, ensuring that design becomes a driving engine for social and industrial progress.

Chiaki Murata Hosted Lecture on Design Thinking-Driven Global Import and Export Strategies in Hong Kong
On July 28, 2025, renowned Japanese industrial designer Chiaki Murata held a lecture on Design Thinking-Driven Global Import and Export Strategies at Hotel ICON in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. In a 90-minute presentation, Chiaki Murata explained how design thinking can enhance ODM companies’ product differentiation, innovation capabilities, and international competitiveness, and introduced his “Behavioral Design Thinking Method”, covering the entire process from product planning to production. Following the lecture, senior Blackstone advisor Cheng Sheng engaged in a 45-minute dialogue with Murata, which was followed by a Q&A session. The event attracted numerous industry professionals and showcased the practical application of design thinking in promoting brand value and global market strategies for the manufacturing sector.

2025年7月28日，日本著名工業設計大師村田智明在香港尖沙咀Hotel ICON舉辦「設計思維驅動的全球進出口策略」主題講座。村田智明在約90分鐘的演講中，闡述如何通過設計思維提升ODM企業的產品差異化、創新能力及國際競爭力，並介紹其提出的“行為的設計思考法”，涵蓋產品企劃到生產的全流程。演講後，黑石高級顧問程勝與村田進行約45分鐘對談，隨後進行提問交流。此次活動吸引了眾多業界人士參加，展示了設計思維在推動製造業品牌價值及全球市場佈局中的實際應用。
